Where Can I Place a Buoy?

The placement of buoys by homeowners is regulated by Georgia Power Company and enforced by GPC and the DNR. Here are the published GPC regulations regarding private buoys on all of GPC’s North Georgia lakes, including Lake Burton.

“Only DNR or other agency-authorized regulatory buoys are permitted, and all other buoys, floats, swimming ropes, etc., must meet the following guidelines:
-they are only permitted to be in the lake between Memorial Day and Labor Day
-they must be located no further than 50 feet from the shoreline and must not interfere with the legal flow of boat traffic
-they are not allowed to have the appearance of a state-enforced regulatory marker.
Any buoys or other apparatus not complying with this guideline are subject to removal by GPC or GADNR.”

LBCA Foundation Advocate Program

By LBCA Member Lin Goen

In June 2023, I became an Advocate for an LBCA scholarship recipient. My duties as an Advocate are to keep in touch with the student at least once every three months and to be a resource and encourager for them.

Marlen is a first-generation college student in her family. She is attending the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, majoring in Business. She is a hard worker who maintained good grades in high school while working full-time as a Walmart grocery picker. We got to know each other this year by getting together a few times for lunch and cooking a meal together, which she took home to her family. We also texted several times to catch up.

During this first year, she was timid. We met in June this year, and I was excited to see how she had grown in confidence during her first year away from home.  Marlen chatted comfortably and told me the great news that she was on the Dean’s list and had also been able to meet all her needs between the scholarships she had received (LBCAF and HOPE) and her work.

She finished the first year debt-free and has that as a goal for her remaining years.  She has been delightful, and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be her Advocate for these four years. I’m sure we will remain friends and keep in touch after she has graduated.

The Scholarship Committee is looking for more LBCA members to partner with students and become Advocates for our scholarship students. We especially need people interested in mentoring in the following medical areas:

•Dental hygiene
•PA
•Nurse
•Occupational Therapist

If you would be willing to help in this way, please contact Lin Goen at 770-356-1758.

Lake Burton Civic Association Foundation Awards 2024 Scholarships

Thanks to the incredible support and generosity of Lake Burton Civic Association (LBCA) members, this year's scholarship program has profoundly impacted the lives of deserving students and their families. For over 35 years, the LBCA Foundation has been giving back to the Rabun Community.

This year, the LBCA awarded 11 four-year scholarships of $3,500/year for four years, eight two-year tech scholarships of $750/year for two years, and four one-time awards of $1,500 a year, for a total of 23 scholarships to Rabun County high school students!

"It was a privilege for the Lake Burton Civic Association Foundation (LBCAF) to honor some of the outstanding seniors of Rabun County High School. The generosity of over 200 LBCAF members allowed us to award over $170,000 of scholarships to Rabun County seniors this year, relieving them of some of the financial burdens of pursuing their dreams of a college education,” said Diane White, chair of the Scholarship Committee.

Donations from members and friends of the association fund the LBCA Foundation Scholarship Program. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be residents of Rabun County and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants must also submit an essay describing their academic goals and how the scholarship would help them achieve them.

Donors Ray and Cynthia Pagano said, "We admire and believe in the LBCA’s higher education scholarship program and are thankful we can contribute. We were fortunate to meet a few of the students applying for these scholarships and were amazed at their drive to further their education."

Through its scholarship programs, the foundation aims to create opportunities and remove financial barriers for deserving students, enabling them to pursue higher education and realize their full potential.
